Review: 'Due Date,' Galifianakis Try Too Hard For Laughs-
POSTED: 12:27 pm CDT November 5, 2010
UPDATED: 3:03 pm CDT November 5, 2010FAIRWAY, Kan. -- One of the biggest questions in the movie world right now is, what do we make of Zack Galifianakis? It's an important question, especially for fans of comedies, as Galifianakis has moved from underground hero to one of the biggest players in comedies today. His role in the "The Hangover" solidified his stature as one of the funniest people in Hollywood. His work on the HBO series "Bored To Death," is also brilliant.Despite some wonderful and hilarious
performances, past success doesn't always equal future success. That holds true with "Due Date," which comes out Friday and pairs Galifianakis with Robert Downey Jr.On paper, that combination has brilliant potential, but in real life the movie tries way too hard and misses on offering many of the belly laughs one might expect. The movie tells the story of Peter Highman (Downey), who is trying to get on a plane home to be with his pregnant wife, who is due to have a baby at the end of the week. In the airport and as they board the plane Peter has a pair of run-ins with Ethan Tremblay (Galifianakis), which cause both men to be kicked off the plane and put on the no-fly list. To make matters worse, Peter's wallet and belongings all stayed with his bags on the airplane. In the rental car parking lot, Ethan offers Peter a ride across the country and he reluctantly agrees. The hijinks ensue as they make their trip across the country.

Galifianakis' Ethan is an odd actor, who is headed to Hollywood with the goal of being on a show like "2 and a Half Men." Downey's character is a more straight-laced architect, with a sharp wit.The problem with "Due Date" is it tries too hard for its gags and jokes. Road trips movies are nothing new, and part of what makes them funny is the crazy things that happen along the way. Instead, this movie gives hijinks that are so far beyond the realm of possibility, the audience can't relate.Part of what made a movie like "The Hangover" so funny is that many guys have had experiences somewhat like the bachelor party the characters were on, and the movie just took it to the next level. In "Due Date," we can relate to being on a road trip, but it takes the experiences to the an unlikeable level.

Actress Jill Clayburgh Dead at Age 66-
wo-time Oscar nominee Jill Clayburgh died Friday at her home in Connecticut of complications from chronic leukemia, the New York Times reports. The 66-year-old struggled with the disease for more than two decades.
Her husband, playwright David Rabe, said she faced her illness with courage, turning it into "an opportunity for her children to grow and be human." She is reportedly survived by three children.
Clayburgh portrayed family matriarch Letitia Darling on the ABC series 'Dirty Sexy Money,' (co-starring Lucy Liu and Peter Krause), which ran for two seasons and ended last year.
Clayburgh, alongside such peers as Anne Bancroft, Shirley MacLaine and Jane Fonda, helped to usher in a new era for actresses in Hollywood by playing women who were confident and capable yet not completely flawless. Her dramatic turn as a divorcee exploring her sexuality after 16 years of marriage in "An Unmarried Woman" earned Clayburgh her first Oscar nod.
